PERSONALITY:
Sam is a man who, somewhere in life, lost his path. While younger, he treated his sword as a tool of justice yet the only justice he would ever fulfill was death. Consumed by his own feelings, he never saw himself treading his way to evil on a path paved in good intentions. He possesses a heart built of vengeance and a sword made to draw blood. The two combined creates a flawed man who, in canon, eventually finds himself as a villain and working for a man he sought to kill. For the AU, thankfully men like Professor X exist and could foresee when someone like Sam would reach a critical point and halt it.

As a person, Sam is fairly pleasant to spend time with, if one can get past the massive sword and sheath hanging at his waist. He’s certainly cocky, self-sure, and always ready to present a smug smile for hundreds of various reasons. This is actually infuriating in a fight because he never seems to carry himself seriously and will often break contact with an enemy to take the time to issue a taunt and swagger around. But those same insults are calculated to anger the enemy so he can take advantage of their emotions. Despite what he displays on the outside, deep down, he’s calculating the best path to victory and his seemingly wasted motions are there to create openings.

As a man whose ancestry is both Latin American and Japanese, his family is very important to him. And his family was well known as famous swordsmen back in the older days. Due to that, Sam takes his swordsmanship and martial arts very seriously. Because his father was murdered by his own student, Sam took it upon himself to increase his skill with the sword well beyond even his own father so he could avenge his death. To master both takes an exceptional amount of skill, talent, and patience but Sam did it anyway, a testament to his dedication and his loyalty to the art his family created.

Sam also respects strength. He believes might makes right but not in the sense that the physically strongest is most right. Instead, he believes that he who has the strongest beliefs will be triumphant. In the AU, because of his defeat at the hands of Logan, he has rectified his own beliefs. His blade is pledged to Professor Xavier and has adopted the Professor’s goals as his own with the logic that Logan carries the same goals. The strength that gave Logan the ability to defeat him is one worthy to serve. Despite that, Sam still carries quite a bit of roguishness and sometimes needs to be corralled as he has no respect for murderers, slavers, and oppressors.

POWERS/ABILITIES:
Sam’s power is the ability to slow down time while moving at normal speed himself. At normal function, this allows him to cut bullets out of the air with his sword with ease and aim precision strikes at moving targets without any undue stress. It’s an ability that acts instantly for a duration of 10 seconds at a time but can be dropped to mere moments if required. In a fight, he will use this power at varying times, mainly before dodging an attack at himself or before launching an attack of his own.

He can also take a few seconds to charge up and compress all ten seconds into one single moment. While charging this, a red aura spins around him. Once unleashed, he can use that moment to swing a sword three times in the space of a single moment in time but that is the limit of time it grants him.

This ability, however, only applies to things directly connected to him, which is why he uses a sword as a weapon. If he were to fire a gun, the moment the bullet leaves the barrel, it moves at the slowed down speed, making it more of a normal weapon.

The limits on this ability are extremely strict. There is no pushing past the limits or going beyond his own abilities. What you see is what you get.

While not an ability of his own, it should be noted that his sword was forged by a mutant with metal manipulation abilities (see AU). It’s an incredible weapon that can take immense amounts of stress. Sam uses a sheath for the sword that utilizes its strength by firing a charge that shoots the sword out of the sheath with the strength of a bullet.

AU HISTORY:
Samuel was born in São Paulo, Brazil as a 3rd generation immigrant from Japan. His father was half-Japanese and probably the biggest influence on his life. In Brazil, his father ran a Brazilian Kenjutsu dojo. He focused on the Uradachi technique, which was also called the Murdering Sword. It was a technique that tended to bypass inner peace and, instead, focused on the violence part of swordsmanship.

Unknown to Sam, his father was also a mutant with the ability to manipulate metal. When same reached the age of 16 and had graduated from his father’s school, his father forged the Murasama blade for him as a gift, using his own mutant abilities. The blade carried a red hue, a reminder of what the end result of the family swordstyle would be.

When he reached adulthood, disaster struck. His father, broad daylight, was murdered by one of his own students. When the police refused to investigate and the student got off free, Sam was suspicious and quickly discovered mafia connections. His assumptions proved correct as it was a hit job ordered by an anti-mutant group. Before he let rage consume him, Sam began to train extremely hard in both his family’s sword style and in Judo, as he couldn’t always have his blade at his side.

Once he was satisfied with his own skill, he hunted down the student that killed his father. When he was slain, he moved on to a bigger target, the mafia in Brazil. Sam quickly found out that the mafia of western countries didn’t follow the school of swordsmanship and preferred guns. The moment he discovered this, the stress of coming close to being killed awakened his own mutant abilities. Slowing down time, he had no issue batting bullets out of the air with his exceptional sword and slaughtering every single member of the mafia that came in his sight.

But his fight continued to expand as he began to uncover hints that this mafia gang was taking part in child abduction and slavery operations. Over the course of the years, he followed this trail of children, killing everyone he deemed as implicated in this crime. His sword and spirit began to drown in the blood, which was what began to catch the Professor’s attention. Here was a mutant who could very easily turn evil and harm the very people the Professor wished to keep safe.

So when Sam tracked the child slave cartel back to an American senator, instead of finding the senator to kill (and probably cause a massive anti-mutant surge), he found Logan. While Logan was certainly not on Sam’s list, he was in the way. That and he was very strong, which excited Sam. The two fought but exquisite blades and slowed time was no match for healing factor and adamantium and Sam found himself severely injured, unable to continue. He awoke from his wounds in the presence of other X-Men and the Professor. From there, he was given the offer to join the X-Men and assist at the Institute. Seeing the power of their belief, he pledged his sword to the Professor and offered to help his cause how he could.

SAMPLES

NETWORK SAMPLE:
I already have had to send a few essays back to their writers, students. You see, it is not about the content of the paper. You could write me a fifteen page paper on the politics of Argentina and Germany after the Second World War and how it harmed the common farmer but if I do not feel your spirit behind it, I will not accept it.

Facts, I don’t need. I already know most of that. Conviction….yes. Conviction is going to be your biggest ally in life. If you cannot display it in a simple sociology class, you and I will need to spend fifteen minutes in the Danger Room. Hopefully after that, you can give me a paper worth reading, yes?

[He paused to show off a toothy smile.]

Those fifteen minutes won’t be fun so don’t get any ideas. And yes, if we do need that remedial work, it will be graded.

LOG SAMPLE:
“Hah! Do not forget the first rule of single combat, my friend.”

The friend in question was a oversized sabertooth tiger, freshly created by the Danger Room. When the creature charged, Sam deftly stepped to the side, helped along by his own mutant power. The creature bounded by him and tried to turn but Sam was quicker. His sword raised above his head, he brought it down to the creature’s back.

“Never turn your back on your foe.”

And he suddenly stopped before the blade connected. Sure, it was the Danger Room but, even then, it was an innocent creature. One far before his time that wouldn’t mind eating him but still a simple animal nonetheless. It did not deserve his ire. That and he could almost feel the pressure of a test behind this simulation. But that hint had only come now, after he stopped himself. Sam congratulated himself, feeling that he passed the test, letting an innocent creature live instead of giving it a death that he’d be well within his rights to give.

Before his time as an X-Man, he would have killed it without reservation. Now, it was a different story. Leisurely waving his hand, Sam cut short the simulation. He could certainly continue to to battle but it’d be pointless at this stage. He had already surpassed his own expectations. His sword was restrained but he did not give up the values behind the style itself. A balanced medium that sated his fighting spirit much better than any death would.

He tapped the back of his blade against his head before ornately putting it back into its sheath. There was a class of students expecting him soon. With such precious children looking up to his instructions, he couldn’t let them down.

“Another day, simulation room. Next time, come with something that might be a challenge, yes?”
